Job Description:
SNL Pakistan’s news team seeks an experienced copy editor/proof-reader to ensure accuracy, clarity and consistency of newsletters and on-line news content produced in real time. If you read newspapers with a red pen in your hand, and spelling errors and poor grammar send chills down your spine, this is the ideal position for you.
Position Summary:
Responsible for overseeing the compilation and completion of designated stories in his/her assigned news group. Writes and edits stories for publication. Assists in day-to-day administration and management of work flow. Enforces procedural and operational discipline within news group.
Principal Duties:
- News editing. Edits stories as required, with an eye toward clarity, accuracy and consistency with SNL procedures.
- Training. Works one-on-one with editors and writers in Pakistan office to improve written English of existing Pakistan news workforce.
- News writing. Writes stories as assigned.
- Completes other assignments or projects as assigned.
Shift:
This is a night shift position with a comprehensive salary package
Education:
Degree in English, writing or a related subject.
Experience:
High-level written English language ability. Minimum 2 years of journalism or equivalent external experience preferred. Prior news writing experience such as a newspaper, magazine or newsletter preferred. Fluency in journalistic areas (AP style, libel issues, etc.) Editorial skills helpful.
Specific Skills:
Incumbents must possess competency in word processing and spreadsheet software. Must demonstrate high-level English language ability, and demonstrated editing competencies.
Abilities:
Ability to exercise good judgment. Good understanding of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. Effective communication skills, both oral and written. Excellent copy editing and proofreading skills. Meticulous attention to detail; commitment to producing quality product; deadline conscious. Excellent planning and organizational skills. Must be able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines. Must be a self-starter. Ability to troubleshoot systems and editorial problems as it pertains to deadlines. Analytical ability.
TEST:
A screening test is being administered on Saturday April 11th and April 18th at 4 PM at our office location at 101-W Al-Khair Plaza, 2nd Floor, adjacent to the Islamabad Stock Exchange, Fazl-ul-Haq Road, Blue Area, Islamabad. The test will be similar to a GRE-English based writing test and allows us to gauge English grammar and comprehension skills.
